Do you need to wait 30 minutes after eating before swimming?

Despite what your parents may have told you, the answer is generally no. There is no real threat of cramps, drowning or spontaneous death associated with a post-prandial dip in the pool, or returning to the ocean after a PB&J and some juice. But before you discard the rule, consider it an opportunity to get your kids to stay and eat a bit more of their sandwich before rushing off to rejoin the other kids. Also, certain kids may need a few minutes for their food to “settle” before returning to action. A couple good belly flops off the diving board or too many somersaults will give you a messy opportunity to say “I told you so.”
